BinaryGFX — With Alienware’s BinaryGFX technology, users have the ability to switch between discrete or integrated graphics.

Stealth Mode — While in Stealth Mode, discrete graphics cards are turned off and other components throttle down to achieve a 65W power limit.

AlienSense — This facial recognition software identifies numerous distinguishing features, utilizing the M17x’s webcam to read and verify biometric measurements that cannot be faked or stolen like a typed password.

Power isn’t only on the inside of the Alienware M17x. Protect your world with Alienware’s all-new, anodized aluminum case design with aggressive lines and in-your-face attitude that can manage your thermals and look good doing it. And you can personalize your machine with a choice of two color options: Metallic Silver or Metallic Black.

QuickTouch system control pad — Run your fingers above the keyboard on your M17x and you won’t feel a thing. Your laptop, however, will. The Alienware QuickTouch control pad uses touch-capacitive sensors to access and manage power and volume controls, Bluetooth® and wireless connectivity and Command Center and Stealth Mode launch functions. Illuminated by the dramatic AlienFX lighting control system, QuickTouch renders mechanical buttons and control knobs obsolete.

In today’s IT environment, users tend to be defined by their computing devices and much of IT operations are focused on managing, securing, and ensuring the compliance of these devices. But what if IT could shift its focus from specific devices to the individuals using the devices?

Achieving True IT Simplicity

Dell Flexible Computing solutions are built on our belief that achieving true IT simplicity requires a paradigm shift from managing an ever-growing number of devices toward managing the end user’s digital identity — the data, preferences, applications, operating system, and associated IT policies that uniquely define the individual. This shift in focus is a key step toward delivering IT services more flexibly to a variety of client devices. This approach represents an evolutionary progression toward a ubiquitous computing model in which users can access their specific corporate resources from anywhere using a variety of devices.

Balancing Control and Flexibility

To realize this objective, Dell’s Flexible Computing solutions are designed to provide IT with centralized control of end-user data and images (or digital identity), while still enabling end-user flexibility to work from anywhere and eventually on any device.

With its insert/assembleediting capability, it can be used as a recorder in a linear editing system – just like a conventional VTR. 23.98P and SD legacy formats are supported as standard. What’s unique about this deck is its ability to operate on AC, DC or power. With its large 4.3-inch* LCD and built-in speaker, it performs as a versatile and high-quality recorder which is suitable for both in-house and field operations.

Jen-Hsun Huang, the chief executive of Nvidia, deftly tucked a plate weighed down by Taiwanese breakfast fare underneath an even heavier bowl brimming with congee and held both in the same hand.

“I used to bus a lot of tables at Denny’s,” he explained, making me a feel a bit better about my inability to mimic his balancing act. Mr. Huang left Taiwan as a youngster and went to the United States, but he enjoys trips back, whether it’s to eat 100-year-old eggs -– “Man, I love these” -– or to race cars with other members of the business elite who’ve come to rule the underbelly of the computing industry. Business leaders here enjoy something approaching rock-star status, and Mr. Huang, dressed in a leather jacket and T-shirt, fits the part. As he cruised around the Computex trade show last week, people clambered for his attention.

The big question for Mr. Huang is whether or not he can keep this adoration and interest in Nvidia at historic levels. The graphics chip maker sits as a crossroads of sorts.

Most immediately, Nvidia has suffered from declining overall PC sales and an even more dramatic abhorrence on the part of strapped consumers and businesses for the high-end machines that often rely on Nvidia’s chips.

In its most recent quarter, Nvidia’s revenue fell 42 percent to $664 million. Like many Silicon Valley companies, it has turned to layoffs to cut costs during these lean times.

Longer term, Nvidia must grapple with competitors that appear to have it trapped. Advanced Micro Devices bought ATI, giving it a strong line of graphics chips. Next year, Intel plans to release a new line of graphics chips that join its flagship products. Both companies plan to mix standard and graphics chips on the same piece of silicon. As a graphics-only player, Nvidia can’t match this combination.

Rumors have swirled for ages that Nvidia will make an x86 chip to rival Intel and A.M.D.

“If we have such a product, I haven’t found it yet,” Mr. Huang said. “It’s just not important right now.”

Instead, Nvidia has invested in countering Intel and A.M.D. on three fronts.

It will keep pouring money into making the best graphics chips possible, believing such silicon can outclass rivals and make Nvidia the company of choice for the most demanding engineers, media companies and gamers.

Nvidia has also spent years trying to open the architecture of its graphics chips to programmers, so they can turn the products into accelerators for business tasks traditionally handled by Intel chips, such as cranking through difficult scientific calculations. Through its CUDA software and Tesla chips, Nvidia hopes to carve out a prominent place in data centers for the first time. Lastly, Nvidia has built new lines of chips aimed at mobile devices like super-small laptops and smartphones. It takes about $1 billion to make a chip from scratch, according to Mr. Huang, and Nvidia is about $500 million to $750 million into its Tegra project. “Every time there is a difficult quarter, someone wants to blow it up,” he said. “But in order to do something great in the future, you have to take risks today.” A number of Tegra-based products were on display at Computex -– most of them thin, cheap netbooks built by Taiwanese manufacturers like Foxconn and Compal. Later this year, phone companies will start selling the devices, which boast all-day battery life and strong graphics technology, at discounts to entice people into data-service contracts. When it comes to championing these products, Mr. Huang’s exuberance can rub people the wrong way. Mr. Huang often describes Intel in flamboyant language as a lying, cheating rival that abuses its dominant position in the chip business. He criticizes A.M.D. as as a graphics laggard. He’s relentless while pushing the idea that graphics chips will become more important and more interesting than standard chips as the world moves in a multimedia direction. He argues that the chief executive of a company must take on the role of a cheerleader and repeat these messages over and over again until the company’s employees believe in the cause. Without such rhetoric and a focus on something new, companies tend to fall back on what they’re already good at and try to protect existing businesses. “The C.E.O. has to be the virus,” Mr. Huang said. “To build a great company, you have to kill it a bit every day.” A belief in this principle lets Mr. Huang absorb shareholder criticism and keep chasing his long-term strategy. “Our mission statement does not say, ‘Make shareholders happy,’” Mr. Huang said. “It says, ‘Create long-term shareholder value.’”

The tech company says it will discuss a new version of software for the revolutionary smartphone, which will let users copy and paste messages, search their iPhones, and write e-mails and text messages from a wide-screen view.Tech bloggers are hoping for something more: a 3.0 version of the iPhone hardware. An iPhone 3.0 could include new hardware like a video camera, a better photo camera and a new design. That would be in keeping with the spirit of the Worldwide Developers Conference, which has become known for groundbreaking announcements. The consensus prediction among tech journalists is that Apple will release an upgraded 3.0 operating system with a new iPhone, most likely in July. The other thing tech writers are looking for at WWDC: the possible return of Apple’s chief executive, Steve Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January. In a news release, Apple says “a team of Apple executives,” led by Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will give the conference’s keynote address at 1 p.m. ET Monday.Link….
